Staying Motivated in the Offseason

Everyone is driven by something different. For some, it’s money. For others, it could be doing the right thing, setting a new record, inspiring others, attaining fame, or something else entirely.

For me, staying motivated is about understanding that this process is bigger than myself. Working out and staying sharp isn’t for me—it’s all about the greater cause.

Every time I go home to Shreveport, I see my brothers and the friends I went to high school with. Most of them work two jobs, living paycheck to paycheck, which is how it’s been for me most of my life. Their hard work humbles me and helps me realize that, by comparison, what I’m doing is easy. It’s easier to get up and run sprints because I know that, if given the opportunity, anyone back home would cherish it. I could be anywhere I want to be, but I’m in Columbia working on my skills because I know this opportunity is bigger than myself.

Here’s a quick look at my offseason schedule:

  • Wake up and eat a good breakfast
  • Run for 5-10 minutes to warm up
  • Basic in-season lift (including bench press, back squat, pull ups, weighted pull ups, dips, etc.)
  • Running routes/catching practice (often with former Mizzou QB James Franklin)
  • Eat lunch
  • Work 5-10 p.m.
